Description
This triangular point exhibits a slender profile, with a cross-sectional shape that ranges from elliptical to flattened. The blade's curvature can vary, displaying either an excurvate or straight alignment, and may feature serrations along its edge. The parallel notches are positioned low on the blade, creating shoulders that slope upward and a stem that expands outward. The base of the point is concave, often forming distinct basal ears or auricles. The presence of basal thinning and grinding is a common characteristic, while some specimens display fluting. The flaking pattern on this point is random, lacking a consistent or organized arrangement.
Size
The dimensions of these arrowheads are characterized by a total length ranging from 20 to 55 mm, with an average measurement of 35 mm. The stem length varies between 6 and 11 mm. In terms of width, the blade spans 20 to 32 mm, while the neck width falls within the range of 15 to 22 mm. Notably, the basal width is slightly narrower than the shoulders. Additionally, fluting is present, covering between one-third to two-thirds of the point's length, as initially described by Suhm and Krieger in 1954.
Distribution
San Patrice points are predominantly clustered in the western Gulf Coastal regions (red) and taper off into the eastern Gulf Coastal areas (yellow). San Patrice points are also documented in central Texas, particularly among St. Johns, Hope, and Rodgers Side Hollow (Brazo Fishtail) varieties (green). Hurst et al. (2009) notes the presence of Hope and St. John's variants at the Hardwick site in Roosevelt County, New Mexico, which falls within the green zone
