Description

Topaz Mountain is an obsidian source in Juab County, western Utah (T.12S., R.11W., sections 28, 29 and 31, and T.13S., R.11W., sections 6 and 9, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation source guide). The Northwest Research Obsidian Studies Laboratory ranks it second among Utah sources in its database of more than 8,000 characterized artifacts, behind Wildhorse Canyon. The Nevada guide also lists Topaz Mountain among the Utah sources found in Nevada at the Garrison site and the Panaca Summit site complexes, and notes that Utah sources have much higher rubidium than Nevada ones, which lets a laboratory tell them apart. The opened sources say nothing about colour, quality or geology, so this page is a location and ranking note.

Geology

Juab County, Utah. The opened sources give a location only. The Nevada Department of Transportation notes that the Utah sources have much higher rubidium than Nevada sources, which can be used for chemical sourcing.
