Description

Late Classic buff ware with red painted designs. Known for thinner walls, more refined symmetry, and sometimes reduced painting intensity. Patterns include stepped forms, panel motifs, and simplified geometric arrangements.

Size

Bowls 18–28 cm in diameter; jars 22–36 cm tall. Many pieces display thin, well-fired walls that differ from earlier, thicker Classic forms.

Distribution

Primarily found in southeastern Arizona and Tucson Basin, with smaller quantities in Phoenix Basin and Tonto Basin.

Additional information

Tanque Verde represents one of the final painted buff wares in the Hohokam tradition. It is associated with late Classic period platform mound communities and declining population centers.
