Description

St. Johns Check Stamped is a Woodland/Mississippian pottery type marked by check-stamped impressions on the exterior surface. These impressions are made using a wooden paddle carved with a checkerboard pattern. Vessels are usually globular jars with simple rims and rounded bodies.

Size

Jars commonly measure 18–32 cm tall with rim diameters 16–28 cm. Wall thickness is typically 6–10 mm.

Found primarily along the St. Johns River drainage and Atlantic Coast of northeast Florida.
