Description

Early Hohokam buff ware with red designs emphasizing rectilinear panels, diagonal hatching, opposed triangles, checkerboard patterns, and small curvilinear accents. The overall style is balanced and symmetrical, with careful framing lines and broad interior panels.

Size

Bowls typically 18–28 cm in diameter. Jars range from 20–38 cm tall. Wall thickness tends to be moderate to thin, reflecting improved firing control.

Distribution

Most abundant in the Santa Cruz River Valley near Tucson and throughout the middle Gila River region, with spread into Phoenix Basin sites.

Highly diagnostic for the Sedentary period, Santa Cruz Red-on-Buff shows an evolution from earlier Gila Butte styles toward more rigid and geometric layouts.
