Fine clay with moderate sand temper. Surfaces are bright white slips with crisp black mineral paint. Firing produces even, durable surfaces.

Description

Extremely fine black-on-white pottery with intricate geometric patterns, naturalistic animal figures, human scenes, and symbolic compositions. Classic Mimbres bowls are famous for their artistic sophistication and often include kill holes in the center.

Size

Bowls typically 20–32 cm in diameter with very thin walls. Depth is usually 10–20 cm. Jars and small bowls occur but bowls are dominant.

Distribution

Centered in the Mimbres River drainage of southwestern New Mexico, with distribution throughout the Upper Gila, Rio Grande, and adjacent Arizona uplands.
