Description

Laguna Polychrome is a historic Pueblo ceramic tradition from Laguna Pueblo. It features a light cream or buff slip with black and red painted designs. Motifs include scrolls, triangles, stepped shapes, and stylized cloud or feather imagery. Vessel forms commonly include bowls, jars, seed jars, and water jars with well-shaped shoulders and gently flaring rims.

Size

Bowls generally measure 16–30 cm in diameter, while jars range from 18–32 cm tall. Walls average 4–7 mm thick.

Distribution

Center of production at Laguna Pueblo, with distribution through nearby pueblos and communities across the Rio Grande region.

Additional information

Laguna Polychrome develops during the 19th century and reflects both traditional Pueblo stylistic continuity and growing involvement in regional trade and later tourism markets.
