Description

Hopewell Zoned Rocker Stamped pottery features areas (“zones”) filled with rocker-stamped impressions, separated by smooth or plain zones. Rocker stamping creates repeated arcs or zig-zags by rocking a tool edge across the surface. Vessel forms include conical jars and bowls with straight or slightly flaring rims.

Size

Most vessels fall between 16–28 cm in rim diameter, with heights around 15–28 cm. Walls generally 5–9 mm thick.

Distribution

Occurs throughout the core Hopewell region: Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and surrounding river valleys.

Zoned rocker stamping is a diagnostic Middle Woodland Hopewell decorative style associated with mortuary and ceremonial contexts as well as domestic sites.
