Material
White to light gray clay body with quartz sand temper and a washy, light slip. Designs painted with mineral pigments that usually fire black but can appear dark brown.

Description

Cibola white ware type characterized by a light slip and black mineral-paint designs with widely spaced hachure. Decoration often uses banded layouts and diagonal hatching, giving a more open appearance than later, denser styles.

Size

Bowls typically 16–28 cm in diameter; jars 22–36 cm tall. Some large bowls and shouldered jars can exceed 30 cm in diameter.

Distribution

Produced mainly in the Cibola region of western New Mexico and eastern Arizona; widely traded and occasionally found as far east as Texas.

Additional information

Gallup Black-on-White is a key Pueblo II type in the Cibola region and often appears with Red Mesa and Chaco Black-on-White. Its relatively early date range and distinct hachure spacing make it valuable for ceramic dating.
