Material
Fine buff clay tempered with fine to medium sand. Painted with red mineral pigment over buff slip or directly on the body surface.

Description

Buff ware with red painted designs from the Hohokam Classic period. Decoration often includes complex panel arrangements, broad framing lines, cross-hatching, interlocking stepped motifs, and well-executed curvilinear elements. Bowls often exhibit “interior rim paneling,” and jars show vertical panel divisions.

Size

Bowls usually 20–36 cm in diameter; jars 25–45 cm tall. Pitchers and specialized serving vessels occur with heights from 15–30 cm.

Distribution

Centered around the lower Gila River and the large Classic-period centers (Casa Grande Ruins, Gila Butte, Snaketown), spreading across south-central Arizona.
